GIS Manager

Kate A. Handberg

Kate is responsible for supporting the Analysis, Valuation, and Technology Solutions department through project deadline and accountability tracking, supporting project managers, and assisting with project processes. Her duties also include facilitating project management, strategic planning, GIS staff supervision, and GIS business development.

Kate holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Prior to her position with Steigerwaldt, Kate was a climber and plant health care specialist for Savatree, where she performed disease treatments and became proficient in tree pruning and removal processes.

She is a member of the International Society of Arboriculture.

In her free time, Kate enjoys running, hiking, camping, and cooking.

Geospatial Solutions Director

Janet Silbernagel, PhD

Janet serves as the Geospatial Solutions Director at Steigerwaldt Land Services. She is responsible for leading geospatial services into new growth areas and supporting the Analytics and Technology Services division by advancing GIS approaches. She is also responsible for client communications, team management, project deliverables, and the management of department data, systems, and processes. Janet specializes in geodesign, which leverages geospatial solutions throughout landscape planning processes, including stakeholder engagement.

Janet began her career as a landscape architect with the U.S. Forest Service and went on to earn an M.S. and PhD from Michigan Technological University in Landscape Ecology. From there, she spent 25 years as a professor at Washington State University and the University of WI-Madison where she taught GIS, landscape ecology, and regional design courses. In this role, she also led research projects and traveled around the Great Lakes region, Asia, Switzerland, and Washington State.

Most recently, before joining the team at Steigerwaldt, Janet founded and ran a private consulting business for Geodesign.

Outside of work, Janet most enjoys water-based activities, liquid or frozen: swimming, paddling, ice skating, snowboarding, and skiing.

Forest Analyst

Fleming A. Talton

Fleming serves as a Forest Analyst at Steigerwaldt Land Services. His primary responsibilities include geospatial analysis, remote sensing analysis, and web service support to forest resource projects including timber valuation, forest carbon quantification, and market research. Fleming facilitates and coordinates communications with clients and stakeholders as well as within the Analysis and Technology Solutions team.

Fleming holds a Master of Arts (MA) in Geography with emphasis in Natural Resources Management from Appalachian State University. Prior to joining Steigerwaldt, he worked for a private timber resources company in precision agriculture and as a Biological Technician with the US Fish & Wildlife Service.

Fleming lives in the Appalachian region of North Carolina and loves getting outside whenever possible (especially with his black lab / hound mix Roscoe). He enjoys playing the drums and guitar, vegetable gardening, and cooking.
