Our Core
Derek Schummer has been with Steigerwaldt for just over 12 years. He currently holds the title of Forest Operations Manager.
What do you specialize in?
I specialize in forest management, timber sale planning and administration, forest inventory, and Managed Forest Law planning. As Forest Operations Manager, I also focus on coordinating projects, supporting our team, and helping landowners turn their goals into practical management decisions.
What does a day in your role look like?
Most days involve a mix of project planning, supporting our foresters, communicating with clients, and reviewing schedules and budgets. I also spend time in the field, helping work through challenges and keeping projects moving. No two days are quite the same, which is something I enjoy.
What initially drew you to your field?
An interest in the outdoors and working with natural resources drew me to forestry. I liked the idea of doing hands-on work where the decisions we make today can have a lasting impact on the land.
What energizes you and keeps your passion going?
Seeing progress keeps me motivated, whether it’s a successful project, a landowner reaching their goals, or a team member developing new skills. There’s always something to learn and a new challenge to work through, which keeps the work interesting.
What is your favorite part of your role or favorite thing about working at Steigerwaldt?
I enjoy the variety of work within my role and collaborating with the team to solve challenges and move projects forward. I also appreciate the flexibility Steigerwaldt provides, which helps me balance my work and personal life.
What are three attributes that describe your team?
