Project Forester

Craig T. Dalton

Craig serves as a Project Forester at Steigerwaldt Land Services where he serves as the primary contact for forest management projects and the liaison between the field, client, and senior management.

Craig holds a Bachelor’s of Science Degree from the University of Illinois in Forest Management. Craig also has a Master’s Degree in Forest Science from Texas A&M University. He is a member of the Society of American Foresters and the Forest History Association of Wisconsin.

Prior to joining the Steigerwaldt team, Craig most recently served as the Property Manager for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. He also served as a Forester with the Department for many years with an emphasis on timber sale establishment and administration and has extensive experience working in Lake States timber types.

In his free time Craig enjoys dabbling in many outdoor pursuits. Most notably hunting, fishing, skiing and traveling with family.

Senior Forester

Dave L. Dhaseleer, ACF

Now retired from his full-time role as Vice President, Forestry Operations Advisor, David continues to work in a limited capacity as a Senior Forester. With his vast forestry experience and 28-year history with Steigerwaldt, David works closely with select clients on forestland management and advises staff on a wide range of forestry matters.

Forester

Sydney P. Ellis

Sydney serves as Forester at Steigerwaldt Land Services. She is responsible for setting up and administering timber sales, harvest boundary delineation, timber marking, and gathering inventory data.

Prior to her current role, Sydney worked as a forestry technician where she conducted stocking surveys, and preformed timber stand improvement work.

Sydney is working towards her Bachelors of Science degree in Forest Management at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point and is expected to graduate in May of 2023.

In her free time, Sydney enjoys being outdoors. Some of her favorite activities include hunting, hiking, snowboarding, and camping. She also enjoys spending time with friends and family.

Forester

Austin A. Hopfensperger

As a Forester with Steigerwaldt, Austin is responsible for setting up and administering timber sales, which includes harvest boundary delineation, timber marking and gathering inventory data.

Austin holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Forest Management from the University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point.

During his last year of college, Austin was a Forestry Technician with Steigerwaldt. Prior to working at Steigerwaldt, Austin was a Forestry Technician with Grossman Forestry in Newberry, Michigan and a Forestry Technician for the US Forest Service in Helena, Montana.

In his free time, Austin enjoys most outdoor activities and spending time with family up north, but especially enjoys competing in bass tournaments.

Division Coordinator/Arborist Valuation Specialist

Philip K. Jenkins

Phil serves as the Division Coordinator/Arborist Valuation Specialist at Steigerwaldt Land Services. He is responsible for supporting the Forestry and Appraisal departments through day-to-day functions related to project management, budgeting, and assisting staff. Phil specializes in tree inspections and using his knowledge as an arborist to generate support driven, quality, and accurate tree valuations.

Phil holds a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Forest Science with an emphasis in Forest Management.

Prior to his current position, Phil was an Arborist, working in both the municipal and private tree care industries. He is an ISA Certified Arborist with six years of experience in tree pruning, removals, cabling, planting, and consulting.

In his free time, Phil enjoys spending time with his girlfriend and their two dogs: Rizzo and Indi. He enjoys skiing in the winter and being active in the summer or sometimes just hanging by the lake and enjoying the serenity of Northern Wisconsin. He is an avid fan of the Brewers, Badgers, and Packers, despite the disappointments they occasionally (routinely) bring.

Forester

Max J. Kubisiak

As a Forester with Steigerwaldt, Max is responsible for setting up and administering timber sales, which includes harvest boundary delineation, timber marking, and gathering inventory data.

Max attended UW-Madison and earned his degree in Forest Science and graduated in May 2021. He is also of member of the Society of American Foresters.

Prior to this position, Max interned with Steigerwaldt in the summer of 2020 through the Connor Internship. Max also worked at Sand Valley Restoration Trust where he got experience in forestry, as well as creation of public recreation trails. A big part of Max’s life prior to forestry was caddying at Sand Valley Golf Resort, which enabled him to earn the Chick Evans Scholarship.

In his free time, Max enjoys being outdoors. Some of his favorite activities include hunting, fishing, archery, skiing, biking, golf, powersports and so much more.

Forester

Nathan M. Loeffler

Nathan Loeffler serves as a Forester at Steigerwaldt Land Services. He is responsible for setting up and administering timber sales, which includes harvest boundary delineation, timber marking, and gathering inventory data.

Prior to his position in the Forest Operations department, Nathan was part of the Analytics and Technology Solutions team where he assisted in the logistics and planning aspects of carbon projects and in carbon field work around the country. Now, Nathan works in the Forest Operations department where he works with current TIMO clients and related timber sales.

Prior to joining Steigerwaldt, Nathan was an LTE Conservation Forester for Compass Land Consultants and worked on a fixed radius plot project similar to carbon plots. He also worked on forest inventory, timber marking, and timber sale preparation work. For his internship, Nathan worked at Stella Jones and selected red pine suitable for telephones.

Nathan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Forest Management from The University of Wisconsin Stevens Point.

In his free time, Nathan enjoys doing all kinds of outdoor recreation such as running, biking, hiking, cross country skiing, camping, and so much more! He also enjoys being with family at the cabin and working on projects.

Senior Forester

Mike D. Love

Mike is a graduate of Vermilion Community College and holds a degree in Natural Resource Technology.

Mike is responsible for overseeing activities on clients’ land bases and ensuring logging, site prep, and reforestations are completed in a safe, effective, and timely manner. His duties include timber marking, boundary line establishment, timber sale administration, harvest planning, reforestation contracting, planting and site prep administration, rail car loading logistics, and timber cruising. He specializes in pine management, harvest planning, and ensuring timber sales are set up and completed in a timely manner for clients. Mike is a member of the Society of American Foresters.

In his free time, Mike enjoys spending time with family, hunting, fishing, shed hunting, and getting his kids involved in the outdoors in any way possible.

Vice President - Field Operations

Joe A. Mattke, ACF

Joe serves as Vice President of Field Operations for Steigerwaldt Land Services. Joe has worked for Steigerwaldt since October 2010 and has been a forester in northern Wisconsin since graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry with a Forest Management and Urban Forestry Emphasis. He is a member of the Society of American Foresters and the Association of Consulting Foresters. He is a cooperating forester with the Wisconsin DNR, a certified plan writer, and is FISTA-SFI trained.

Joe specializes in oversight and execution for forest operations for our large private landowners (TIMO, REIT, and large private non-industrial ownerships). He is experienced in all aspects of Lake States silviculture, third-party certification systems (SFI and ATF), timber sale harvest planning, establishment, marketing, contracting, and administration, inventory execution and field oversight, forest road maintenance and improvement, and reforestation planning and contracting.

In his current role, Joe manages foresters in Steigerwaldt’s Tomahawk, Wisconsin, office. He is responsible for operations oversight of approximately 175,000 acres of client-owned properties, as well as client and company budget management, client relationships, project management, staffing, procurement, and execution of business directives and expectations.

Operations Director - Forestry

Derek B. Schummer

Derek serves as the Forestry Operations Manager at Steigerwaldt Land Services. He is involved in project management, staff oversight, and business development support within the department. In his current role, Derek oversees a team of foresters who provide all aspects of land management for our large private landowners. He is responsible for operations oversight on client-owned properties, as well as client and company budget management, client relationships, project management, staffing, procurement, and execution of business directives and expectations.

Derek earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Forest Management, with a minor in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), from the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point in 2012. Prior to enrolling at UWSP, Derek enlisted in the U.S. Army from 2005 to 2007. Derek is a member of the Society of American Foresters, a cooperating forester, and a Certified Plan Writer for the Wisconsin DNR; he has also earned his FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot license.

Derek specializes in all aspects of timber sale setup and administration on a variety of timber types for clients including non-industrial private landowners, investment companies, and government agencies. Derek assists on timber inventory projects nationwide by providing logistical planning, as well as performing fieldwork. Derek also supports teams that monitored the implementation of forestry Best Management Practices (BMP) in Michigan and Minnesota.

In his free time, Derek enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and kids. Some of their favorite activities include traveling, biking, camping, and fishing.
