Have you ever wanted to turn your maple forest into a maple syrup operation? Ed Steigerwaldt shares his experience doing just that in the 2018 edition of The Consultant, the journal of the Association of Consulting Foresters.
With an emphasis on tradition, Ed and his family welcome the return of spring by taking part in time-honored methods for tapping, gathering, and cooking sap to deliver sweet results that last the whole year long. With the help of family and friends, this hobby operation produces approximately 50 gallons of hand-crafted syrup each year. As Ed says, “Maple syrup is a multimillion dollar business in Wisconsin, but the enjoyment that comes from making the syrup and tasting the end product with family and friends is priceless.”
